Race #1 - 2019

  • 1 mi - 8:25 / 2 mi - 8:07 / 3 mi - 7:57
  • Overall Average Pace: 8:03
  • I had A LOT of nerves prior to the race. I probably needed to warm-up just a little longer. My calves were pretty tight for the first mile.
  • Overall, I am pleased with my time. I'll admit that I was a little disappointed when I was able to see the finish clock. I really, really wanted to be under 25:00.

I was forced to run on the treadmill due to a snowstorm over night. I marked my mileage on my phone since I could only run around 6 miles before the treadmill stopped. Somewhere during my boredom, I lost track of my mileage. I ran an extra 4 miles!

In retrospect, I am glad for the added miles. I've been concerned that my weekly mileage is too low for my upcoming race.

Glad to hear the treadmill is becoming your friend. Definite advantages to it - one of them being precise pacing. I nearly always hate the transition to it in the winter, but then find I begin to enjoy and look forward to it.

Another day on the treadmill,

The weather is warming, but not much is melting. I hope that I remember how to run outside once the roads and sidewalks clear! I hung out a little longer at the health club. The heater went out this morning so the house is a tad bit cold. I hope the repair company makes a timely visit!

I could have run outside, but can tell that it is going to take a lot of mental convincing to get me back outside on the roads. The sidewalks and road ways are free of snow and ice. The temperature was close to 20 degrees. A few snowflakes were wafting in the air. The thought of bundling up in multiple layers was just not appealing so I hopped on the treadmill.

Today was a no mile day. I feel as if this training plan does not have enough weekly miles to prepare me for a  marathon so I ran. I like the cross training aspect, but the low weekly mileage is really messing me up mentally. I must admit that my race finishes have been strong. My times are faster and my foot no longer hurts. Something is clearly working.

The windchill factor puts the temperature at 27 below. I can't recall a time where I have experienced this cold of outdoor temperatures. My dog is sporting her pink sweater and I am bundled in pretty much everything that I own!

I ran on the treadmill. I don't understand my current love affair with the treadmill. I ran 4 extra miles because it was just so much fun!

A few years back, I had a night job in retail. Around Christmas time, I heard the song "Marshmallow World" so many times, I became angry at the thought of it. Like, every run around that time was 30 seconds per mile faster, because I was so angry I couldn't get that song out of my head. ....wait what was I talikng about? Um, so yeah, music has a strange connection to exercise!

The weather was outdoor running, but the sidewalks were not clear. Normally this would not have detered me, but running 16 miles off and on heavily trafficked roads led me back to the treadmill. Most of the upcoming week should be outdoor runs. It will be hard to leave my newly discovered running buddy, the treadmill!

I have two races on February 16th. The first race is a 10K. My running coach is using this race to determine if I am on course with my upcoming marathon. The second race is a fun run, The Hot Chocolate 5K Race. I have raced so little over the past two years, I am experiencing a GREAT deal of trepediation.

I suppose it is good that I have a coach because I would probaby do something really stupid with my training and risk injury or talk myself out of doing the events.

A running coach - that's new, right? Good for you. I think you'll find that very helpful.

That Pure Barre workout is tough for sure. I've done variations of it, thinking it's no big deal. It is. Will pay dividends in the running game, however.

I could not get past my foot injury from last year so I hired a running coach. Happy New Year to me! Right?

My coach has been AMAZING! I am learning so much about proper training volume, pacing, and rest. He is working with my strength imbalances to prevent future injuries. The entire experience is just super motivating and inspiring.

  • The outside temperature was 13°. If I had a short run, I'd be outside. 20+ miles is a long time to keep my fingers and toes warm. Dealing with Raynaud Phenomenon is a hassle at times.
  • I ran for about 3 1/2 hours on the treadmill. Yes! It was fun! My brain accomplished and orginized so many ideas! I focused on my nutrition and hydration. I visulaized my upcoming race course and strategized over the areas where I fell apart last year. I contemplated whether I could truly retire in the next few years from teaching. I realized that my will needs to be updated to include the grandkids and I formulated a children's book idea to author.
  • I ran a pace of 11:20 which was faster than the 12:35 pace that was on my training schedule. The entire run felt light and carefree.

Good memory! My coach is looking at a 4:10:00 marathon. The marathon in March is to be a practice race to see how my foot handles the miles. Then, he'll adjust my training based upon my results.

I actually ran this race on Saturday. I ran it six hours after the Valen Times 10K. This is significant because I never, ever, ever run in the afternoon.

Splits:

  • 1 mi - 8:19 / 2 mi - 8:04 / 3 mi - 7:59 / 3.31mi - 8:12

Thoughts:

  • I dressed better for this race. Fewer layers kept me feeling light even though I was very frigid. The wind kicked up. I kept thinking that with each turn the wind would be at my back, but it never happened!

  • Overall, the run was a positive experience. My nutrition went well. I practiced my fast walking while drinking and eating. I had no problem getting back on track with my targeted pace.
  • I dressed appropriately for the outdoor conditions. I wore different mittens which kept my fingers warmer than last week. I had a few problems with my running belt. It came loose around mile 7.  I had to stop and readjust it. I'll need to consider how to secure the straps so this does not happen on race day.
  • I was a little disappointed with my final 5 miles. It felt that I was running faster than my recorded paces.  I was hoping for a stronger finish.
  • I am looking forward to beginning my taper weeks!

You're into taper mode now, right? And increasing your carbs this week?

I know with the Hanson's training program I use, they talk of cumulative fatigue as a training principle. Basically, feeling the heavy legs you describe.

I've certainly felt that every time I've used the program - most especially beginning about 7 weeks out from race day.

The taper and the carb load take care of it normally. What you feel now is not as important as the way you feel race day. You've got this!

I ran in the rain this morning. I considered running on the treadmill, but the race day forecast is predicting rain. It made sense to practice in the rain. If the temperature is in the mid forties like this morning it will not be too bad. I was wet, but not really cold. I am hoping that for once the weather forecast is wrong!

Today was meant to be a post about my marathon race. But, endeavors often take unexpected twists and turns so no matter how much I plan and organize the actuality does not always match the intention.

I have been working with a running coach for the past 4 months. Our work together is two-fold:

  1. Heal my foot-injury / Stay injury-free through cross-training and proper rest
  2. Run in the Boston Marathon (I have qualified twice, but my times have not made the final cuts)

My coach contacted me yesterday. Conditions for my marathon were the following:

  • 100% rain
  • 15 mph winds
  • Decreasing temperatures throughout the morning

We decided that this was not the race for me to qualify for Boston. I am not a quitter, but this decision really brought me peace.

As far as my run went this morning, I have three words to describe it - stink, stank, stunk! It rained the entire time. My Garmin stopped talking around mile 6. My music stopped around mile 7. My running belt slipped down my hips at least 5 or 6 times and my Cliff bar was a mushy mess of goo. Had this happened during a race, I doubt that I could have recovered.

Tomorrow is onward and forward!

Don't get discouraged, "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome" ! Was this your seventh marathon? Good on you for continuing the good fight. We all seem to control the life out of our running and fail to remember that you can control just about everything running, like the miles you train, the course you train the time you get out the door to train, the food you eat, but at last the one thing you have no control over is the weather at the starting line. It's always "What you see is what you get"! Congrats on getting thru the Marathon, now it's time to reload and pull the trigger on another Boston Qualifier marathon! There is a really sweet marathon in Huntsville Utah, called the "Full Monty" that is a definitely fast gentle down hill run that's easy on the legs....check it out.

It was a miracle that I made it to this event. I just currently do not want to race. On my way home from work last evening, I noticed that a section of the People's Trail was submerged under water. My initial thought was, "Hallujah! The race will be canceled for a second week in a row!" To my disappointment, there was no cancellation notice this morning.

I literally willed myself to the race and to the starting line. Once the race began, I got into an easy rhythm with my pace. My self-talk was positive. I encouraged other runners along the race course. I felt strong at the finish line. Whatever forboding I was anticipating, it just did not happen. I'll need to remind myself of that for my next race in four weeks.

Thoughts:

  • The temperature was pleasant, mid-50's. It rained for the final 5 miles, but I was already wet from sweat so it was a non issue.
  • My mental health really needed this workout. State testing has begun. I am not sure why six and seven year olds require state testing, but here I am standarize testing them for the third time this year.
  • I do my best to keep it light and low key. But, their little legs shake. Their hands flutter in the air as they try to read that next difficult word or passage. Their eyes plead for respite. It breaks my heart. Education is a mess in the United States. It doesn't need to be this way, but as long as we have politicians leading the charge there is little hope for real, impactful change.
  • Over the past three years, I have heavily researched the educational reforms in the Scandinavian countries. I've adopted many of their educational philosophies of outdoor learning, collaboration through STEAM lessons, principles of self-regulation, and the creation of an environment of community. I know that my learners experience a great year of learning. It's a small start to perhaps a bigger change.

I ran with my son this morning which is always a lot of fun. He is trying to get back into the running world. We are doing a 10K at the end of June in Indy. With Mother's Day around the corner, he gave me a new running belt which is totally sleek and form fitting. I tried it out this morning. I rocked it!

I ran a mile this afternoon with my Girls on the Run group. Running with 3rd - 6th graders is an adventure in patience. No matter how many times we talk about running strategies, they ALWAYS start at full-throttle. Our t-shirts should say, 6 second runners. That's all we've got!

  • The rain held off for my run, so it was just a cool, crisp morning. I had a lot on my mind. Running always clears the muddle of my thoughts.
  • I have a viewing this afternoon of two of my former first grade students. It is so sad for these young girls as their adopted mother passed away this week. Life can be so cruel at times. I pray that another family member will take these girls in and love them as dearly as their adopted mother.

This was a hot, hot, hot race this morning. Temperature at start time was 75°. My running coach advised me to run a 9:30 pace  so I knew that I would not be attempting a PR. Except for the final mile, I was happy with my results. I need to figure out how to run a course tight so I am not running extra mileage.

These were my splits according to my Garmin:

  • 2 mi - 9:04 / 4 mi - 8:56 / 6 mi - 8:59 / 8 mi - 9:15 / 10 mi - 9:38  / 12 mi - 9:30 / 13:38 mi - 9:50

I am still awaiting for the official race results for my time and overall place.

  • My suggested pace seemed impossibly slow. I thought, with the heat and himidity, I would just run whatever pace my body set for itself. I was pleased with the results. I felt comfortable and relaxed the entire time.
  • I have aother half-marathon in two weeks so training in the heat is helpful. It's been such a cool Spring that last weeks heat wave really threw me off my race pace. Hopefully, at this upcoming race, I'll see improved results.

  • Slow and easy this Memorial Day morning. I ran around my town's various war memorial's. It was somber seeing all of the American flags and flowers lined along the walk ways and gravestones. The stillness of the early morning gave me time to reflect on those who died during military service. I am much appreciative of their sacrifice, but realize that I know little about true sacrifice.

  • I like starting my runs long before dawn. I constantly gaze at the stars and am reminded of my smallness in relation to the universe. The pace, hustle, and bigness of which I often choose to live my life comes into stark perspective at these moments. Jesus' entire life was small - his entrance into the world through a manger, his vocation as a carpenter, his death on a lonely cross, even his private resurrection from an empty tomb - all declared his humility and acknowledgement of purposes that far outreached his earthly body. Small is how I wish to approach God, others, and myself. My 14 miles was time well spent,

Thoughts:

I'll start with the positives because the fam says that I focus on my disapointments too much. I appreciate their honesty.

  • This was the first time that I did this race. The course was beautiful! I loved running through the city. There was so much variety for the eyes and ears to observe and hear. The course took me on streets, bike paths, steel bridges, and brick paths. I enjoyed the assortment of textures for my feet to experience as I ran. The bridges were slick due to the steady rain, but they were fairly short. The last four miles or so were along the river canal. That was absolutely picturesque.
  • The medal is HUGE. It represents everything powerful, strong, and invincible that the race promotes about females. I felt that way finishing this race in the rain today.
  • Cake! Yes! Cake at the finish line! Who does that? Sign me up for next year!

I have only one not so positive moment which is pretty good for me!

  • Race pacer - I put myself with the 2 hour pacer. I assumed that this would keep me close to my goal finish of just under 2 hours. The first 2 miles were incredibly fast for a 9:10 pace. I ran an 8:45. I could barely see the pacer. I knew that my current recovery training had not prepared me to sustain this type of pacing so I had to slow down. My thought was to keep the pacer in my view at all times and just hope that I could stay close enough to have a strong finish. By mile 10, I saw her on the other side of the river canal. She was now running alone and had almost caught up to the 1:50:00 pacer. I do not know why this upset me so much, but it did. I pretty much gave up at this juncture of the race. Fortunately at mile 12, I stopped my pity party and kicked my pace into high gear. I passed runner after runner until I got to the finish line. I achieved my goal by the hair of my chinny, chin chin!

Congratulations on reaching your race goal! Well done!

Too bad about the pacer's mistake. They are such a critical part of the race for many runners - myself included. It sucks when they are off. But you hit your goal anyway. Good for you.

The cake was an inspired touch. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Well deserved.

Race: Indiana Sports Corp Indy Ultimate

I ran today's event with my son. We completed the race four years ago during its inagural year. We really enjoyed it, but just never returned. First year attendees were encouraged to return this year with a significantly reduced race fee so my son and I said, "Let's do it!"

The course was red flagged by our start time of 8:30 AM due to the heat index. I felt fine throughout the course, but my son experienced some heat issues. It was good that the race promoters set up additional water and cooling stations.

The race was totally different from our first year. The staggered start was much better. We were released with about 50 runners which meant zero congestion. We also ran a longer distance to each fitness obstacle which also lessened congestion. I never had to stand in a line to start my obstacle and/or strength work.

Running through the city of Indianapolis was hands down a sight to behold. The canals glistened in the sun. The monuments begged me to linger a little longer with my gaze. The sky scrapers shaded my steps. The police officers cheered my efforts.

I experienced the rare opportunities of running the bases at Victory Field, kicking a field goal at Lucas Oil Stadium, hugging the NCAA Men's Basketball Trophy at the NCAA Hall of Champions, and kissing the bricks of the Indianapolis Speedway. What a great city!

I finished as Top Runner Overall Female! This was also a PR for me! My pace per mile was 7:41.

This course is not a favorite for me. We run through Mill Race Park. The start of the race is highly congested. We zig and zag on the People's Trail. There is a lot of bumping and slow pacing for the first mile. My first mile was around 10:00. I knew that I was really going to have to kick my speed into high gear if I was going to have a decent finish time. I'm glad that I chose to run the 10K so I had time to make up the difference  since both races started at the same time.

I realy need to begin increasing my weekly mileage. I may have to complete two a day running workouts. I just can not safely squeeze in any more early morning miles. Leaving the house at 4:30 AM makes me uncomfortable.

Nice job. Funny how your 10k pace from earlier this year is faster than your 5k pace. Some people are like that :)

My preferred race is the half-marathon. I hit my stride around mile 3 or 4. I've signed up for several more 5K's to see if I can improve at this shorter distance.

I wore my hydration back pack hoping that I would not run out of fluids, but I misjudged my fluid intake. By mile 16, my pack was empty. I stopped at the hospital to get a drink of water. This helped me make it home with little difficulty.

I had a shingles shot yesterday. Pumping my arm while running was pretty painful. Fortunately, I was running at a stand still for this workout so I managed to hold off the majority of the pain.

I updated the Map My Run app this morning. When I did that, I lost all of my data for today's run and the year. I know it is insignificant, but I am slightly irritated. I dislike the constant manipulation of taking away inorder to get more from something or someone. I REALLY have zero intention now of purchasing the app. I'm know that the app is down to bare bones, but I'll stand my ground and remain free.

I really enjoyed last weeks workout of running slow / fast / slow / fast , etc. so  I did it again this weekend. My goal was to run about 1 minute faster than my suggested long pace which I was easily able to perform today. The weather certainly cooperated as it remained in the low 70's with a slight breeze and moderate humidity. I am confident that I could have mentally and physically pushed out a few more miles.

I attempted to run some of the marathon course from memory, but in typical fashion I found myself lost throughout the neighborhoods. I observed some lovely homes and realized that the soccer season has begun in full force. Perhaps with only four weeks until the marathon the road crews will begin marking the streets for the race!

This was an easy long run. I felt strong and light on my feet. I was about 6 minutes slower than I would have liked to be at 16 miles, but I was not really pushing myself this morning.

Around mile 14, I noticed flashing crosswalk lights going off in the distance. They seemed to be flashing for a long time. As I approached, I noticed a young boy waiting at the crosswalk, but vehicles were not stopping to let him cross the intersection. This really irritated me. I sped up to the light and hit the button to activate the flashing lights once again. I told the boy that I would assist him across the intersection. He took my hand. I put my hand out to the vehicles and together we crossed the street. He thanked me and I apologized to him for all of the drivers that disrespected him and the rules of the road. I just don't understand rudeness, but especially when it is done to a young child.

For the time being, I have just resolved to keep pushing forward.

Sounds exactly like my sister. She has lost her running mojo.

My advice to her, for what it's worth, was to stop following a training program and just run for the fun of it. Not having to worry about what some schedule tells you re: pace and distance frees you up to just get back to running for the fun of it. If there's no joy in it, nothing else follows.

From Nora Jo on Tue, Oct 15, 2019 at 17:24:14 from 73.102.192.105

That is good advice. I am so stressed during and after each run. I started running to relieve stress. After awhile,I fell in love with it. I need to get back to my roots, running just to run! Thanks for the friendly reminder.

From Tom K on Tue, Oct 15, 2019 at 19:20:47 from 65.218.129.82

But that is what pulls at us - on the one hand, you've got goals, paces to hit. On the other hand, you would rather run downtown and get distracted. Sometimes trying to hit goals wins, sometimes running for the sake of running wins. That is, like, everybody that runs.

Just keep plugging away at it!

This race was sponsored by a former first grade student. She is now a senior in high school. I love supporting their endeavors and appreciate how they stay connected with me through the years.

In typical fashion, I am a slow starter. If I could figure out how to improve my first mile, I might enjoy 5K events better.

1 mi - 8:38 / 2 mi - 8:17 / 3.107 mi - 8:06

Both good races. Well done.

Regarding that first mile, have you ever tried running strides just before the race? They work well for races 5 km and under.

After you've warmed up, run about 100 yards on a straight stretch. Start slow, pick up speed, hit an all out sprint for maybe 20 - 30 yards, then slow down. Recover and then repeat for maybe 5 - 8 times. You might find it solves that first mile issue.

From Nora Jo on Mon, Oct 21, 2019 at 16:01:55 from 73.102.192.105

That is a good suggestion Michael. My next race is a half-marathon, but then I have three 5K's to finish out the year. I will try your strategy with the 5K's.

I always run a little bit to warm-up before a race, but I do not push the pace. Doing some strides might really address my slow starts. I have always found it odd that my 10K overall paces are faster than my 5K's. I usually hit my stride around mile 3.

For my birthday, I ran my last EVER marathon! I had not prepared myself physically or mentally as I decided 3 weeks ago to do this event. I had very low performance expectations, but I finished feeling satisfied with my results.

I learned a few helpful tips today to move my half-marathon training and race results to perhaps a higher level:

1. Because I suffer from Raynaud's Disease, I learned that I can not race in conditions below 30 degrees. Today's race began and ended with a wind chill of 22 degrees. By mile 5, I had no feeling in my fingers. By mile 9, I had no feeling in my toes. I was unable to handle any of my race nutrition. This meant that I ran the entire race without food. I ran a lot of the race with my hands in my pockets. Many runners offered me their gloves, but I was unable to put them on over mine since I had no feeling. Around mile 11, a runner gave me heat packs. He slid them into my gloves. He was stunned to see my white hands and chose to run with me for several miles to make sure my hands somewhat warmed up.

2. Map my Run stinks as a mileage and pace tracker! I probably need to stop being so miserly and invest in a quality Garmin. Here are the differences in what happened on the race course with my paces:

Map my Run: First Half - 2:05:22 / Second Half - 2:11:49 / Overall Pace: 9:52

Monumental: First Half - 2:09:38 / Second Half - 2:24:36 / Overall Pace:10:28

3. I need to look UP when I run. If I had looked UP more often, I might have realized that my Garmin was not in sync with the official race clock. I might have run my final half faster than what I actually did. Again, no regrets. It was a satisfying finish to an event that I have never enjoyed!

Tomorrow my birthday celebration continues with another trip to Indianapolis. I'll cheer the Indianapolis Colts on to a victory over the Miami Dolphins. I really am a Denver Broncos girl having grown up in Denver, but the Broncos season is all but over. Perhaps John Elway will get his act together and secure a decent quarterback like Andrew Luck since we know that all colts grow up to be broncos!

You were working harder at the finish, there. Good job! Did you have some decent weather for this one?

From Nora Jo on Sun, Dec 01, 2019 at 18:01:31 from 73.102.192.105

Tom - The weather started out in the high 40's which was pleasant. Around mile 6, the wind picked up. The temperature made a nose dive. I was pelted by ice rain for the final 3 miles of my run. The local weather station really missed this forecast!

I am teachng persistence in my classroom for the next three weeks. Today I really had to mentally persist. I easily could have stepped off the treadmill and headed home. My body was all in, but my mind kept saying, "B-o-r-i-n-g, boring!"

This is not a favored race of mine. It is an afternoon race so my legs are typically tired and I don't know how to eat in preparation for it. Secondly, it is a hilly course. I was pleasantly pleased with my overall pace of 8:08. Normally I am the 12th female finisher for this event. Today I was the 6th!

I would have liked running a tad bit faster, but I have a head cold. This was the pace that limited my head pain and uncontrollable coughing.I am just grateful for the blood to be flowing this morning. First grade germ sharing is the worst!

During our Social and Emotional lessons in my first grade class, I attempted to teach my learners about resilience. We watched an inspirational video about runner Derek Redmond. We learned that he was favored to win the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. While competing for the medal, his hamstring tore. He could not continue running. He received a standing ovation because he walked to the finish line instead of giving up. All day long my learners were saying, "I am not going to give up. If I just keep going, I won't have to say that I failed!" I really nailed that lesson!

At the end of the day our phys. ed teacher came to my classroom. She commented on how fireed up my kids were about everything that they did in P.E. class. As she inquired more about their enthusiasm, she heard all about our resilience lesson.

This is what she learned: She learned that a runner ran a race. During the race, he pulled a hamster out of his leg. The hamster was like a rubberband and it just snapped. The runner cried a lot, but he finished the race pulling a hamster.

Teaching first grade is A LOT of fun!

I've had those hamster problems too. I hate it when they squirm during a race. Very distracting! :) Funny story.

This was the final race of the Indiana Timing Race series. I ran only 12 races for the year, but somehow managed to finish third overall female. This was a pleasant surprise. I started the year hoping to finish first in my age group. I should attempt to try less more often! lol

I need to remember that what sounds fun in the heat of July is not fun in the cold of December. All I can say about this race is, "Baby, it's cold outside!"

I ran a total of 2080.31 injury free miles this year. That was 539.30 more miles than I ran last year.

I finished third overall female runner in a race series that I sort of competed in this year. My goal was to win my age group in the race series. It was clear that I was going to accomplish that goal around July as no one else in my age group was even close to my point total. I stopped racing in the series, but in October the race promoter posted race totals. I noticed that I was in 4th place overall for the female category. I began competing again and secured my third overall place.

I did several large races in Indianapolis. My marathon and half-marathon results were mixed. As I age, the weather is really becoming a performance deal breaker. I feel like Goldilocks eating the three bears porridge. I can no longer tolerate races that are too hot or too cold. They need to be just right. Now if I could only figure out what that just right temperature is I'd find my happy ending!

I listened to a blog with Martha Beck. This was her New Year Resolution.  "My New Year Resolution is first, to do my best in all situations, and second, to stand in the mess that is my best."

I really liked her thoughts. She contemplated that perhaps, instead of being here to get things right,  we're here to learn to love the mess that is every human life.
