Running Accomplishments:

I am no great runner, by any means. I'm at an ordinary - or perhaps more like mediocre - level. But that's not important. I am just a girl that loves the fresh air on my face and the feel of my shoes on the pavement.

I began Fast Running Blog a year ago to ensure that each run carried a specific focus to attain my goal of qualifying for Boston. "Ready. Set. Go!" I wrote. And with that, I ran and I ran, day after day piling up miles and races, bit by bit.

During my long distance training runs I discovered that the only opponent I had was myself, the way that I used to be. Had I improved over yesterday?

Yes. I had improved! I qualified for Boston! I only have 1:50:10 under the qualification cut-off, so I don't know if that will be enough. In the meantime, I continue to train, run, and stay injury-free. I remain positve and enjoy the possibility that this ordinary lover of running may be running the streets of Boston!

Short-Term Running Goals:

As long as I have the sense of satisfaction at having done my very best - and, possibly, learned some significant discovery about myself in the process - then that in itself is an accomplishment, a positive feeling that can carry over to the next run or race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

My long-term goal is to be injury-free. I am really focusing on post run stretching and yoga throughout the week.

  • Grateful that I forced myself out of bed because it started raining shortly after I finished. It is still raining!

Observations:

  • Around mile 3, my left knee experienced sharp inside pain. I've never had that happen.  I walked a short distance to my house and called it quits for the morning.
  • I am hoping that the pain is just a matter of switching shoes.
  • I am shy of my weekly mileage. so I need to run more this afternoon.
  • Tomorrow is tobe a rest day. I have a 10 mile race on Sunday. Fingers crossed that this is nothing!

  • 6 miles - 10:13
  • 7 miles - 9:28
  • 3 miles - 9:10
  • 2 miles - 9:42

Observations:

  • Since the left inside of my knee is still bothersome, I thought that I would try running on the treadmill. It was beyond awful in the mental department.
  • My knee hurt with the first few strides so I stopped. I put on my knee wrap and was good to go.
  • I went slow at first then gradually increased the speed.
  • I needed more fluids. I should have hopped off the treadmill and grabbed a drink from the fountain. At mile 17, I just wanted to be done. I knew if I got off, I would never finish the distance.

Observations:

  • I am back from a 10 day vacation. My running was a mess. I had not planned on 15 inches of snow and no treadmill. On the days where the temperatures melted the roadways adequately for pedestrian safety, I tried to accumulate high mileage.
  • My goal today was to run 18 miles. I fell short both physically and mentally.
  • I managed to complete 16 miles just under the 2:40:00 goal.
  • Tomorrow is a new day. Sometimes that is as good as it gets.

Observations:

  • I made a concerted effort to run my easy, fast pace (even on my final mile)
  • Mentally, I felt so much better about my long-term running
  • I am not sure why I feel compelled to push, push, push.  I never really allow for adequate recovery time. I know that leads to burnout which is probably what I am experiencing at the moment.

Observations:

  • Today's focus was to concentrate on nutrition and running the first part of my run slower than the second part. I succeeded with both goals.
  • I picked up my pace at mile 16. I still had a lot of energy if I had chosen to run more miles.
  • Next week, I will increase my speed for the first part of my run to hover around 9:50. With this faster pace, I'll have a clearer idea as to how much I can realistically push my pace and at what mile that increase should begin.
  • There is no way that I would have finished 26.2 miles under 4:00:10 today with my slow pace at the start.
  • My final 4 miles were at a pace of 9:38.

  • The remaining  6 miles were under 10:00 and at a comfortable pace

  • Run my slower marathon pace (9:45 - 9:40). Then, push a faster pace toward the end of my mileage. Clearly, I am clueless at pacing myself! I hope pacers attend my April race.
